CLIA
CMS recently released a report from its Certificate of Waiver and Provider Performed Microscopy Procedures Pilot Project. This study of over 400 labs revealed that 50% of waived laboratories do not follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The only CLIA requirement for waived labs it to follow the manufacturer’s test instructions!
As a result of this project, CMS recommends the following to ensure quality testing:
- Institute an educational program for COW and PPMP laboratories.
- Validate the effectiveness of this educational program.
- Survey a percentage of COW and PPMP laboratories each year
- Develop a self-assessment tool for PPMP laboratories.
- Include educational materials with the CLIA enrollment process.
- Have State Survey Agencies contact COW and PPMP to verify test menus.
COLA
COLA accredited laboratories must now meet COLA’s new requirements for quality control, quality assessment, quality systems processes, and laboratory information systems. For more information, visit www.cola.org.
